What is a Vertical Roller Mill (VRM)?

A Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) is a highly efficient grinding equipment widely used in cement, mining, metallurgy, and industrial mineral processing. Compared with traditional ball mills, VRMs offer higher grinding efficiency, lower power consumption, and superior control of product fineness.
Today, VRMs have become the core equipment in modern cement raw material grinding and slag grinding plants.

How Does a Vertical Roller Mill Work?

A VRM operates with a combination of pressure, shear, and centrifugal forces. The process includes:

1. Grinding Table Rotation

The rotating table creates centrifugal force, distributing materials evenly across its surface.

2. Hydraulic Pressure on Rollers

Hydraulic cylinders apply grinding pressure on the rollers, crushing materials against the grinding table.

3. Hot Air Flow (Drying + Transport)

Hot gas enters from the bottom, drying high-moisture materials and transporting fine particles upwards.

4. Internal Separator (Classifying Fineness)

The built-in classifier separates fine particles from coarse ones:

  • Fine powder → collected as finished product

  • Coarse particles → returned to the grinding table for re-grinding

This closed-loop system ensures consistent fineness and high efficiency.

Adjustable parameters:

This allows precise control of product fineness (e.g., 45μm residue).

3. Better Drying Capability

VRMs can handle 12–20% moisture, making them ideal for raw materials with high humidity.

Modern VRMs use:

  • Wear-resistant liners

  • Hardfaced rollers

  • Segmented grinding plates

Maintenance is simpler compared to ball mills or traditional vertical mills.

5. Compact Layout

A VRM system:

  • Reduces civil construction

  • Occupies less space

  • Minimizes noise and dust emissions

1. Cement Raw Material Grinding

VRMs are the standard solution for limestone, clay, shale, and silica grinding.

2. Slag Grinding

Widely used in GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) production.

3. Coal Grinding

VRMs ensure stable performance with low volatile and high-moisture coal.

4. Industrial Minerals

Used for:

  • Quartz

  • Feldspar

  • Dolomite

  • Bauxite

  • Phosphate
